Zinc Alloy

Where Does Zinc Fit?

Zinc alloys are useful manufacturing materials. They cast easily, support complex shapes and can reduce first cost. That does not automatically make zinc “bad.”

The issue is where the zinc is used. A decorative lever, cover or non-critical component presents a different lifecycle question from a primary pressure-bearing faucet body exposed continuously to water, cleaning chemicals and mechanical loading.

Our specification position: for demanding airports, universities, healthcare, office towers and luxury commercial restrooms, we prefer verified brass or 304 stainless structural bodies over unspecified zinc-alloy primary bodies.

Architects should therefore specify the required certification and lead-compliance standard rather than rejecting brass merely because historic brass alloys sometimes contained much higher lead content.
